Card Review
Official Handbook Translation
This creature has the newly introduced ability from Set.2, HP Reduction. In this case, HP reduction is based on the number of the Dodge attempt the adjacent enemy creatures have. The HP Reduction targets ALL adjacent enemy creatures. This is certainly a nice addition for anti-Dodge selection. Since HP Reduction effect disappears when this creature is destroyed, it is ideal to summon this creature when you can destroy the target upon summoning. With its ability to attack by 2 half the time, Flame Novice is simply a great 1 mana creature.
EOJ Connection Writer, Asahara says
“Nearly everyone thinks the classic 1 mana Fire creature is Flame Magus; however, I believe Flame Novice is better card than the Flame Magus. Despite it being 1 mana creature, this creature has potential of attacking enemy by 2. Flame Novice is guranteed to hit by 1, which is the major difference from Green Lycanthrope. In certain situations, Magic attack is better than Physical attack; however, when you can hit from target’s blind spot, physical attack wins. Generally speaking, all 1 mana creatures tend to be destroyed fairly quickly so its main use should be thought of as 1 hit upon summoning. Oh by the way, I also use this creature often to destroy Elven Berserker Maiden when it is casted on the Earth field.”

This is a good card for 1 mana, and it’s anti dodge is really useful, but the ability has no affect against perfect dodge. I was wondering how it would work before the cards came out, and I thought it might just kill those creatures outright, but in fact it’s just the opposite. So perfect dodge still rules.

Yeah. I was wondering the same thing, too.
I guess we need creatures like Dwarf Sniper for the Perfect Dodge guys. But having said this usually Perfect Dodge creatures are limited to a certain field type or have only 1 HP without the field bonus, so not too hard to kill if you have Fissure or Magic Attack guys.
